Conservative presidential candidate Javier Milei, who previously denounced China as an “assassin,” has won Argentina’s elections.
ZeroHedge reported that Milei won against Economic Minister Sergio Massa during the country’s second runoff elections for the presidency held on Nov. 19. The 53-year-old economist claimed almost 56 percent of the vote, with more than 80 percent of votes tallied. Milei’s win was a stunning upset over Massa, the outlet said.
Massa conceded in a speech before supporters at the capital Buenos Aires even before the official results were released. He told the crowd that he called Milei to congratulate him on his victory. The economic minister eventually admitted that Argentinians “chose another path” when they elected Milei.
Massa placed first in the first round of voting in October, despite losing the Aug. 13 primary election. Surveys conducted before the second round showed Milei with a slight lead over his rival.
“Voters in this nation of 46 million demanded a drastic change from a government that has sent the peso tumbling, inflation skyrocketing and more than 40 percent of the population into poverty,” ZeroHedge noted. It also highlighted “the dire state of Argentina’s economy, plagued by 143 percent hyperinflation and a looming recession.”
During his tenure as economy minister, Massa has struggled to resolve Argentina’s worst economic crisis in two decades.
But Milei, who is set to take office on Dec. 10, has proposed radical solutions. During an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, he shared some of these plans – including making drastic budget cuts, replacing the Argentinean peso with the U.S. dollar and shutting down the Central Bank of the Argentine Republic.
“With Milei, Argentina takes a leap into the unknown – with a leader promising to shatter the entire system, which the locals now correctly realize is broken,” ZeroHedge noted. “A Milei presidency will have profound implications for not only the third-largest economy in Latin America, but also the region.”
According to the outlet, the far-right economist with no previous government experience made a name for himself as a television pundit. Milei was known to insult other guests and show a tendency to fight with the news media in Argentina.
“In a continent dominated by leftist leaders, Milei could create tensions with governments he has attacked, including crucial trading partner and neighbor Brazil. He has branded Pope Francis as an ‘evil’ leftist, called ‘climate change’ a ‘socialist lie’ and said he would hold a referendum to undo the three-year-old law that legalized abortion.”
ZeroHedge added that “in an era of growing Chinese influence in Latin America, Milei could become the region’s most vocal antagonist to a country he once called ‘an assassin.'” He expressed this sentiment against China in August, mere days after winning the country’s Aug. 13 primary elections. If elected, Milei promised to freeze Buenos Aires’ relations with Beijing. “People are not free in China,” he told Bloomberg News. “They can’t do what they want and when they do it, they get killed. Would you trade with an assassin?”
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) quickly responded to Milei’s remarks at the time. MFA spokesman Wang Wenbin told reporters during an Aug. 17 press briefing that the Argentinean president-elect “would have a completely different conclusion as to the freedom and security in China” if he visited the country.
Now that Milei has been elected as president, it remains unknown if he will indeed push through with his plans to sever China-Argentina ties. Nevertheless, X owner and Tesla CEO Elon Musk predicted that “prosperity is ahead for Argentina” with Milei as chief executive.
